Lately I've had a few people asking me for recommendations about other good and green online stores for their Christmas shopping, if I haven't stocked exactly what they are after at The Good Design Store. I am a great believer that those of us working within the eco/sustainable/ethical arena should be collaborating and helping each other as much as possible, as every purchase from one of these stores is another step towards the World that we are all working to create. So here are my top 10 picks for this year, complete with links and a short run down on what they stock or how they work ... lets get shopping
Based in Auckland, and with a pop up shop currently operating in Ponsonby Central, Humanity stock a great range of wooden sunglasses (which I can personally vouch for), watches, and phone covers as well as organic sleepwear label ALAS and the awesome Matt and Nat range of bags. Love that they also support the One Percent Collective.
All of the products on Beloved's online store are made by people trying to overcome poverty, gang life or human trafficking. Their ranges of clothing, shoes, and jewellery are just gorgeous and they also give back to a range of charities with every purchase. I am currently coveting the diamond ballet flats which are handmade in Guatemala.
Recreate design a range of beautiful organic cotton womenswear, menswear and kids clothing. Both my boys love their recreate tees and I have a couple of great dresses and t shirts from last years collection. Winners of NZ eco fashion week designer of the year - this stuff is seriously stylish but still reasonably priced. 100% non profit. Also stock a small range of scarves, jewellery and kids toys from other fair trade companies.
Inkkas NZ stocks the Inkkas range of footwear that is handmade in Peru. Made from sustainable materials under fair-trade conditions and incredibly funky. Also plants a tree for every pair sold through the Trees for the Future project.
I have been converted. My wonderful cousin gave me a starter pack of skin and hair care products from Ethique for my birthday and now I am one of their raving fans and tell everyone how good this stuff is. Cut out the plastic waste in your bathroom by using their solid shampoo, conditioner, facial cleansers and moisturisers.
6. The Green Collective
Two lovely Nelson ladies have created this wonderful company to help us all cut our plastic bag use as stylishly as possible. Their stretchy goodie bags hold 3kg of produce and their organic cotton loot bags are perfect for bulk food items. If, like me, you feel guilty taking your reusable eco bags to the supermarket and then filling them up with fruit and veggies from the produce section in plastic bags then you NEED these!
A great deals website for getting some cool green products on special as well as a great directory of sustainable and ethical products. We have just partnered with them and look forward to working with them further next year.
8. Planet Goodness
Yay - Planet Goodness is back up and running after a short hiatus. They sell NZ owned, eco and ethical products that have been consciously approved for their goodness by a panel of experts. In addition a portion of sales revenue each month goes to one of their charity partners.
9. Green Elephant
We are pleased to feature our products on the Green Elephant marketplace alongside a bunch of other good green Kiwi companies. A new player in the green scene, I can't wait to see what these guys achieve in the coming year.
10. And They Lived Green
For the little ones And They Lived Green has a great range of clothing, toys, skincare and more. I particularly love their range of bowls and cutlery made from BPA free recycled plastic milk bottles and we will be adding to our collection this Xmas.
I hope that my list helps all of you out there who are wanting to have a good, green Christmas. We've got some exciting new products coming to The Good Design Store next year and I look forward to sharing them with you.
