Quote from Jessica Hische designer and illustrator
I first read this quote in Good magazine and something made me cut it out and stick it to the front of my computer. I was going through a process of change with my first child a toddler and a second on the way and having sold my previous business was looking for a new direction. Having always been an exceptionally good procrastinator I started taking stock of my habits!
It turns out that what I love doing most when procrastinating is finding exciting new ideas and things. I have always been passionate about the environment, social justice, sustainability and design and so if you were to look at my Google and Facebook habits you would find that I visit a very eclectic mix of sites. Why not put this all together and create a new business out of it?
I figure that there must be more people out there like me. People who love buying gorgeous jewellery but would prefer it was made ethically and with environmentally sound materials. People who love decorating their houses with unique items from all around the Globe but would prefer that they weren’t mass produced by child labour in China. People who want to bring up their children free from as many toxic chemicals as possible and with a deep appreciation of New Zealand’s natural heritage.
There are many businesses out there that are using really smart design principles to create beautiful and enduring products from sustainable materials. There are a growing number of businesses who recognise the importance of fair trade and giving back to the communities that make their products and to the communities that buy their products. By supporting these companies and helping them grow we can make a real difference to the environment and to people’s lives.
And so The Good Design Store was born – because I believe that with Good Design we can change the World.
